Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.
― Mahatma Gandhi
Do you ever think about how your little habits and quirks make up who you are?
You are a sum of all of your habits. What do they say about you?
Do your habits represent who you want to be? Do they support a life of success?
Changing habits changes our biochemistry. And when we discover the habits that help our body to thrive, we gain clarity and discover how to plug those habits into the life we want to live.
Now, you and I both know this isn’t a new idea. Our habits reflect who we are and that our habits determine much of the quality of our lives.
In order to change our behaviors, we have to start with believing new things about ourselves and about what we can do and become. This is called Identity Evolution.
WHO ARE YOU?
WHAT ARE YOU PERPETUATING?
Get curious. Who do you think you are? How do you present yourself? Are your habits in sync with who you want to be everyday?
According to B.J. Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford University, there are three steps to changing behavior:
1 – get specific
2 – make it easy
3 – trigger the behavior
Most habits are initiated by a trigger or cue. Therefore, we need to establish a routine for a habit that you want to add. This starts by specifically defining the habit you want to create and also keeping it simple. Then repeat, repeat, repeat.
You are the architect of your choices. We are adaptable beings. WHO do you want to become? What habits does that person have?
Are you eating like the person you want to be?
Are you exercising like the person you want to be?
Are you thinking like the person you want to be?
Are you dressed like the person you want to be?
Are you surrounded by the types of people you want to be?
Are you well-rested like the person you want to be?
Are you living in the body that you want to be?
Are you moving through life with ease like the person you want to be?
It can be overwhelming to think and consider all the answers to these questions, but it all boils down to this:
What are you doing today to create the person you want to be tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that?
What tiny step can you take today to step into your fullest potential?
“The difference a small improvement can make over time is astounding…Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. Making a choice that is one percent better or one percent worse seems insignificant in the moment. Over the span of moments that make up our lives, however, these small habits determine the difference between who we are and who we could be.” - James Clear
YOU CONTROL WHO YOU ARE
Through intentional habit evolution, we get clear to WHAT you want. You begin to associate and create habits around WHO the person is that you want to become. You dive deep into WHY you want for your life. This is your anchor.
Changing habits can suck at times, but coming back to your WHY breaks through the bullshit that gets in the way so your path remains clear and you can dump the excuses that got you in a rut and feeling stagnant in the first place.
Are your current habits supporting your evolution or DE-evolution? Do you have the habit of turning off notifications while working, or do you jump down the rabbit hole of cute puppy videos and lose two hours of your day?
See, your habits can enslave you. Or they can free you.
To get specific on your habits, think about the objectives and goals you have in your life right now.
Is it more exercise? Try doing 10 jumping jacks before your day gets away from you.
Is it less stress? Try closing your eyes and taking 9 conscious breaths.
Is it more love? Start with yourself. Here’s how to start.
Is it more free time? Batch task and schedule! Use time blocks to get your shit done efficiently!
Is it better sleep? Start winding down earlier in the evening, then get your ass to bed!
Is it losing weight? Start sipping water between meals. Start to eat dinner a few minutes earlier each day. Notice your habits around snacking or eating late.
SMALL CHANGES CREATE MASSIVE IMPACT
While we only need small steps to start making changes, one of those steps must be stepping into authenticity. Own where you are and what got you here. Don’t beat yourself up over it, but be honest. That awareness allows you to make the conscious choices that help you to evolve into new habits that help you thrive.
“And being honest at every level is really the most effective habit of all if you want to have massive success” - James Altucher
BE BOLD – BE BRILLIANT- BE BADASS
We choose our habits. We choose who we are. We can change our habits. Therefore we can change who we are. No more wallowing in self-pity and blaming others for your stagnation. YOU CHOOSE. YOU CREATE.
Right now…are you choosing to align your daily routine to create potential for optimal living? I use reminders and alarms on my phone to keep me in check. I know over time, these will become automated, but as I continue to evolve my habits, a little nudge (ok, annoying ding) prompts me to take action.
“Let a man radically alter his thoughts, and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life. Men imagine that thought can be kept secret, but it cannot: it rapidly crystallizes into habit, and habit solidifies into circumstances.” - James Allen
